After a traumatic year, all an Indian-American teen wants is to go from pariah to popular -- but friends, family and feeling won't make it easy on her.
This tv show contains 42 potentially triggering events.
A character has parents that are rarely around when they don't have a good reason to be absent. The character is bothered by the parents not being around.
A character befriends someone who is mean to them to the point of where you might call it bullying, but it's not abuse exactly. Another character also forgives someone for an instance of bullying.
Someone follows her family member, but even though it's jokingly referred to as "stalking" in the episode title, I don't think this really represents the experience of a person being stalked/harassed by an intimate partner or stranger. I *have* experienced that (with an ex, who made me feel unsafe) and was not triggered/bothered by this episode - but I don't speak for everyone who's experienced stalking, just myself.
However, a character mentions that their cat has only one eye because he accidentally shot it with a nerf gun. Also, meat and animal products are shown throughout the show.
In the newest season, Devi is at a college club when a guy tries to talk to her. Her friend tells him she’s in high school and he backs off. Later he comes back and tries to talk to her again and she rejects him. He then grabs her and tries to pull her away but somebody else separates them
The main characters dad dies before the shows timeline but it is shown multiple times in a flashback in season one and season four. It is also mentioned throughout the entire show
The main character's father passes away from a heart attack at the beginning of the show. His death and healing from/remembering the even is a really big part of the show. Makes me cry a lot. But still very good.
in season two, devi is dating two people at once, ben and paxton. eleanor kisses malcom and then says “i know, i’ll break up with (boyfriend).” (i can’t remember his name)
season 1, episode 8. eric (the fat kid) barfs into a sink at Ben's party. just about 17:50. it happens quick so just skip about 10 seconds and you'll be good.
season 2, completely safe! only some light mentions of it but it doesn't happen at all during this season.
season 3, episode 4. when devi is dancing with des. as soon as the narrator stops speaking around 20:15, skip around 8 seconds because it skips to ben vomiting into a bush.
season 3, episode 6. around 8:30 when I believe des is leaving and Ben looks shocked, he gets a flashback of him throwing up. again, skip around 10 seconds and you'll be just fine!
season 4, episode 1. at 20:38 someone throws up on paxton's bed. I had forgot about the time stamp and it really startled me. it does look like orange juice but it scared me and I had to cool off.
season 4, episode 9. when devi is panicking in the hall and runs into a classroom she throws up around 8:17 into a trashcan. it's really quick. I skipped around 5 seconds until ben was speaking to her.
In season 3 episode 6. Only mentioned by the narrator, but a character waits for a fart to come on as required for a medical procedure. It’s portrayed in a lighthearted way.
in “Had a Breakdown” in s3, ben eats too many meat sticks and stresses out over school too much and has to go to the hospital due to stomach issues caused by the above reasons, he’s in the hospital for the second half of the episode. id avoid this one.
Devi - goes to therapy after trauma surrounding her dad’s passing, left her paralysed in the year before season 1 started. Paxton - has an anxiety/panic attack at some point in season 2, but is not mentioned again Aneesa - has an eating disorder, anorexia. This is talked about and rumours are spread quite a bit throughout a lot of season 2 (?) but there are no particularly triggering behaviours. Ben - he does neglect his health and eating habits in order to study to the point where he lands himself in hospital, but other than that one episode there is nothing else of concern. They are all teens so they are obviously all going to go through some hardships throughout the series!! Also its been a while since i watched so i may have missed something :P
S2E3, at about 19:30, a character has a brief panic attack. It happens when Paxton is doing his test.
It is safe when you see him sitting on the stairs and Devi comes along. From there, they have a brief conversation about it and the character's history with getting nervous, but here they don't show anything.
No but a girl questioning hee sexuality tells another girl “I think you have the wrong idea about me” when asked if she wants to go to a charity for GSA
Someone is described as "confined" to a wheelchair which as a wheelchair user made me feel crap. Shes the quite literally miraculously cured by a guy being hot?? Shes also trying to remove the reputation of being disabled which again, sucks.
The show also often uses sociopathy and psychopathy as slurs/insult. They also throw around psycho too.
-The main Jewish character is portrayed as an unlikeable stereotype
-the main character says she wishes her Jewish classmate would be killed by Nazis and there is barely any discussion as to why this is wrong
In a very non-serious way, technically yes? A character often refers to the protagonist as David, but this is more because the protagonist's name (Devi) sounds similar to David. Both characters are cis and gender confirming, so it's not really a dig at her gender expression or identity.
There is a character who is arguably a walking fat joke, as he only seems to exist as a comic relief character who eats strange things and overeats. Moreover, some side characters try to argue that fat positivity is an insult to thin people. In season 2, the character who is used as a fat jokes gets more screen time and characterization, and his weight is brought up very little, if at all.
One of the plot lines is Devi loosing her virginity. She doesn’t end up doing it until the ending of s3ep10 and beginning of s4ep1. Her friends also mention losing their virginity and describe what it’s like
Although nobody is depicted having sex on the show, the main character and her friends talk about sex a lot and simulate sex positions using their stuffed animals.
