Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
This movie contains 44 potentially triggering events.
Major spoilers: There are mentions of parents harming/killing their children but it is due to to the demon that they do this and you never actually see any of it happening.
A witch forces one mother to kill her child (it is mentioned a few times and the ghost mother tells one of the main characters that the witch made her do it and we do see the child she murdered). She also attempts to force one of the main characters (a mother) to kill her children. Ultimately, this mother doesn’t kill any of her children. Not technically domestic violence but does involve mentioning of filicide (a parent killing a child). It is as a result of possession/mental torture/coercion but worth mentioning nonetheless.
Yeah, but shes possessed and needs an exorcism so its not for malicious intent, HOWEVER, it is still quite upsetting as there's lots of thrashing, yelling, Ed reciting the bible verse or whatever he was doing, blood comes out of her mouth and stains the sheet and people are crying. It lasts about 2-5 minutes, I wish I had the timestamps but you can kinda tell when its about to happen.
After the jumpscare with the old woman sitting on the wardrobe, the next scene after that one has a mention of child molestation (around 42:00). The ghost hunters are showing their class a video of an (adult) demonic posession victim who they say was abused by his father.
A ghost is shown with her wrists bleeding—they look more like punctures than actual cuts to my eye, but where the marks are located it can be assumed there was cutting involved.
I think the debate concerns the little girl April, towards the end of the film she is hiding from her mother and the audience doesn't know where she is. Another character finds her under the floor of the kitchen and has to break through the floor to see her. However, she had gotten under the floor another way and was not "buried" under it. There are several other times characters end up beneath or in walls of the house but none of them are buried.
The Annabelle doll has a large, noticeable cut down her eye that's shown a few times. Yeah, it's not a human eye, and there's no physical mutilation, but this could maybe trigger someone still.
A witch kills her child then is hanged for witchcraft— a bad parent and never shown being one but technically a parent does die in this movie, and the ghost/demon attacks and tries to kill the Perron parents and the Warrens (who have a daughter)
There is a maid ghost seen by a officer, a woman who murdered her child seen by Lorraine, Rory a young ghost child who is befriended by one of the children and a ghost of a witch hung for witchcraft who is seen by Lorraine and possesses the mother
if you're sensitive to jumpscares, i highly recommend wheresthejump.com, they list both major and minor scares in a number of movies, and have downloadable subtitle files that can warn you in real time when one is about to occur!
A lake in the back of the house. It is mentioned that a boy drowned in it long ago but it doesn't happen on screen. Later we see a girl in the water but it's not real
A teeny clown in the music box, he's head pops up but not really scary. However, if you hate clowns watch out for the Annabel doll cos she's even worse than a clown! Same kind of face thing going on there.....
No, but a possessed doll is the focus during the first few minutes of the movie. Don't watch Annabelle or Annabelle creations if you don't like dolls or the uncanny Valley effect.
3 Times. The first two times are blood, the third is actual v*.
The first time, a ghost v* blood into another persons mouth, making them g* (which you can hear, not really see).
The second time, a woman is having an exorcism done on her. They put a white sheet over her head, and at a certain point, she v* blood, which you only can see because it bleeds through the sheet while over her head.
The third time, after the exorcism, she begins to cough and g* until she eventually v*. This wasn't all that alarming to me when I had watched it because it look pretty cgi to me. Since this is the only actual v* we see, I'll mark it. It starts at 1:41:50 in, (according to HBO Max) and ends at 1:42:00. Too describe the visual, it's fairly close to the screen, (and again, very cgi to me) and look pretty pinkish. Graphic, yes. Realistic, not as much.
There's lots of screaming, loud audio, etc that I would recommend muting if you have sensory issues. You won't miss any of the plot by muting these scenes, the visual is definitely enough. Also a life hack from me for you fellow anxious people; if a movie is suddenly getting too scary, but you're enjoying it and don't want to switch it off all because of one or two scenes, just mute the audio and play some random song over the top. 10/10 entertainment, it's hilarious watching the ghosts screaming and tantruming accompanied by Cupcakke playing in the background 😭
Around 1:12:00, the cop hears a noise and goes to check outside, and when he comes back inside there's a ghost with cuts on her wrists. It's very graphic so skip a few minutes.
There is a scene when Lorraine goes into a small hole after one of the children is found there. She falls though a small gap and ends up trapped in a small area surrounded by ghosts. The possessed mom chases one of her children into a small hole she is hiding in
yes lorianne warren has a lot of trauma from her other experiences as a paranormal activity/ghost hunter thing from when somebody was possessed and she had a scary vision. It is mentioned that she didn’t eat, drink, or leave her room for 8 days after she what she saw (what the vision was was not mentioned or shown)
Sexual abuse perpetrated by a father is mentioned very briefly in a classroom scene, Ed mentions that a person having an exorcism performed on them was a survivor of molestation in passing.
It’s not bad at all, there’s kind of a shocking lack of it for this kind of movie. There is some blood though, and while possessed the mother bites a police officer’s neck enough to make him bleed, but it isn’t profuse.
