Are animals abused?

Some animals don't necessarily die, but are severely abused. Are there graphic details about animals being beaten, bloodied, skinned alive, trapped in cages, starved, or neglected?

A rat is placed into a pan against someones belly and heat is applied to the pan. Also, some dogs are left in starvation, but they later eat their owner, which is nice.

I won't go into detail because it's too awful. If you're sensitive, this isn't for you.

Appa is treated horribly by several characters throughout an entire episode. He is stolen, tied up, sold, beaten, starved, threatened with flames, attacked by other animals. It's a very sad episode, and is hard to watch, and it doesn't really end happily. Appa is reunited with Aang a few episodes later.

Just the one scene, about 1/3 of the way in to the movie. No torture or anything too gruesome, but a rabbit has its neck snapped. The rabbit is only onscreen a few minutes so as soon as you see the rabbit step out/look away for 4-5 minutes.

Really disliked the scene in which a horse is scared out of its mind by having a cloth repeatedly thrown/smacked in the face. The horse nearly falls trying to get away from the actor. Acting or not: there is no animal friendly way to create reactions like this. I can’t believe these things still happen to defenceless animals that have no idea it’s “just acting”. There should’ve been a better alternative with all the CGI that is available. Bad move on the producer’s part here… EDIT: I’ve been working with horses all my life and I know the difference between “learned tricks” and natural behaviour. I know what I’m talking about that’s why the scene upsets me so much. This horse was scared far beyond what should be allowed within animal welfare guidelines.
