Babylon 5

TV Show • 1994 • Drama

Report
Babylon 5 is a five-mile long space station located in neutral space. Built by the Earth Alliance in the 2250s, it's goal is to maintain peace among the various alien races by providing a sanctuary where grievances and negotiations can be worked out among duly appointed ambassadors. A council made up of representatives from the five major space-faring civilizations - the Earth Alliance, Minbari Federation, Centauri Republic, Narn Regime, and Vorlon Empire - work with the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to keep interstellar relations under control. Aside from its diplomatic function, Babylon 5 also serves as a military post for Earth and a port of call for travelers, traders, businessmen, criminals, and Rangers.

It may not count as full-on stalking, but the ex-boyfriend character behaves in ways that encroach on her boundaries, like showing up at her workplace and trying to persuade her to talk to him while she's still on duty, and the big one: moving from where they used to both live (a long way away) to be near her, with the intention that they can be together, without discussing it with her beforehand or mentioning it until he can present it as a fait accompli.

Most notably a character is addicted to perscription stimulants, and there's ever present references to the made up drug "dust." There are also numerous one off incidents too. Characters are drugged. Characters come across a drug and take it for plot reasons. Etc.

It's a major recurring theme. A character is a recovering alcoholic. He relapses twice, both with dire consequences, and there are numerous occasions where he's in social situations, and he has to decline offers of alcohol.

(1) Horrifically in season 4. A character gets their eye forcibly removed with a knife. It happens offscreen, but for many more episodes, it's brought up. In season 5, their prosthetic is switched out with tongs with a close up. (2) In the season 5 episode that starts at the PsiCorps headquarters, there's a character that (with slow advance warning) undergoes massive head pressure until his eyes go extremely red, and he dies.

(1) A character is talking on their commlink next to a dead body. The camera lingers for a LONG time on an angle where the dead body can be seen out of focus over the character's shoulder. Due the some unknown spooky phenomenon, the dead body briefly MOVES and growls. (2) Early season 5, the doctor is seen convincing an alien to ingest a liquid for the sake of medical research. He appears to be completely successful and moves to a different room of medlab and discusses the next thing when the liquid is VERY abruptly thrown against the window and splashes across most of the surface.

The scene in which security officers apprehend a suspect who shot one of their fellow officers is problematic as part of a larger pattern of cops using unnecessary roughness in such situations. The show doesn't present their behavior as admirable, but does suggest that their 'enthusiasm' is understandable and gives them a pass on it.

The ages of Londo and his love interest are not explicitly established, but there's clearly a gap and there's dialogue where he acknowledges being self-conscious about being significantly older than her. The ages of the actors has a 14-year gap: she was around 30 at the time of filming, and he was in his mid-40s.

Scenes where characters heavily make out before and after sex in various forms of undress. There are some tense scenes where a character is worried about needing to have sex for contrived diplomatic reasons, but bluffs their way through it by simply dressing suggestively, making up a goofy dance, chanting, and then making some sexual noises. One character completely undresses to make an advance on another character. A couple goes offscreen to engage in a sexual ritual while a number of people are in the other room. (It is later established that they were definitely overheard.)
