You could say the movie acts as warning against abusive relationships and the danger they pose.

No, but worthy of note: There's a scene where a man follows a woman he doesn't know to her apartment. He knocks on her door and begs her to let him in so he can talk to her. She's naturally suspicious of him. Both characters allude to the possibility of SA--he says "I won't hurt you, I promise" and "You can leave the door open," while she says "I'm gonna yell in a minute" and "You don't look like Jack the Ripper."

No, but worthy of note: A man who is secretly stalking a woman saves her from drowning. He brings her to his apartment while she is unconscious, undresses her from her wet clothes, and puts her in his bed. When she wakes up, she doesn't know where she is or what happened. The man is a stranger to her. Naturally she is uncomfortable at first, but she seems all right once he explains the situation. There's no suggestion that he abused her, but he's already obsessed with her by this point in the movie, and the erotic tones of the scene are clear.

John experiences a state of "acute melancholy" after the events of the first half of the film, and is shown in an institution in one scene. We see the nurses and the doctor, but we don't see any restraints, medication, or distressed or abused patients.

Worthy of note: In the second scene of the movie, John is wearing a medical corset and is embarrassed about it, wondering if "a lot of men" wear them.

A court official publicly shames a man for his debilitating fear of heights. A local historian tells a story about a woman who went "mad," while another woman angrily states she is "not mad." A woman calls herself "stupid" and an "idiot."
