No traditional/recreational drugs are used but a major part of the plot includes injectable serums that cause characters to experience virtual reality-esque ‘simulations’ of their fears etc. You see the serums being injected and the subsequent mental sequences. Could be triggering to people with substance abuse triggers as although the serums are no recreational/addictive, they are injected and do cause ‘hallucination’ ISH experiences.

I don’t think so? (Not sure what the people who voted yes are referring to) None of the serums are shown to be addictive and I don’t recall any drug or even alcohol use. The closest I could think of would be the some aspects of the dauntless factions’ culture/activities seem to be consistent with ‘adrenaline junkie’ behavior. However it is not explicit at all and can also just be explained as the nature of the ‘dauntless’ attribute.

There is no explicit alcohol use/abuse/addiction. The only time alcohol is even shown on screen is a mealtime scene in the dauntless faction when they are drinking amber colored liquid that resembles beer (but it’s ambiguous).
I’m not sure what the ‘yes’ votes are referring to but there is a character who was physically abused by his father, and we see a brief (simulation) scene remembering that abuse. He is not shown to be drunk or anything but maybe because domestic abuse is often associated with alcohol use that’s what people are referring to?

No animals die. There are a couple virtual reality-esque sequences where the character fights off animals (birds and at one point a dog) but it doesn’t appear any of them are hurt (and they are not actually real)

No bugs are shown. In a conversation about each characters’ ‘fear landscapes’ (simulations where characters are injected with a serum that creates a virtual reality sequence where they have to face their worst fears) a character shares that one part of her’s included being covered in little bugs that got in her mouth, throat etc. It is never shown on screen.

Characters slice open their hands as part of the choosing ceremony. A character’s ear is cut when someone throws a knife at her. There are many fighting scenes which may include cutting etc.? I don’t think there are any shaving scenes but I’m not sure.

No head squashing but in a fight scene a character steps on the main character’s head, knocking her out. We see the foot coming toward her (from her POV) and then the screen goes black and it cuts to her waking up a day later in the infirmary.

The dauntless initiation process is very intense (think fraternity rushing/hazing but way more violent). The characters have to fight each other etc. and one of the men leading the ‘training’ is shown to be quite sadistic and frequently punishes characters in somewhat tortuous and/of humiliating ways. The most extreme is probably when a primary character concedes in a fight and he reassures her before walking her to a bridge and pushing her off. She is forced to hang there (slipping and it quite a bit of distress) until he allows the others to help her up.

Abnegation children are shot when the faction is massacred. And, although the Dauntless initiates are not shown as being children, they are canonically teenagers. Many of them die in the movie’s final battle.

At the climax of the film, both of the main characters’ parents are shot at different points while trying to protect her. Obviously it is very upsetting and we see her crying and later feeling immensely guilty.

There are very suspenseful sequences and one scene where a character is assaulted at night but no jump scares per se (and I am pretty sensitive to that stuff and didn’t scream or jump or anything).

There is no self harm as like a mental health struggle; however in the ‘choosing ceremony’ characters slice their hands and drip the blood into a bowl indicating their faction choice. Could be triggering for people who have self harmed or are sensitive to cutting/blood.

Yes. A character becomes resentful and threatened while losing a high-stakes competition (the dauntless rankings) and participates in an attack on a friend (the main character). When she (understandably) doesn’t forgive him he jumps into a chasm and dies. We don’t see him jump but there is commotion when his body is found and we see his body dragged out of the water. His head is bloody but the shot doesn’t linger. The focus of the scene is the main character’s distress and feelings of guilt (she is later reassured by friends that it is not her fault— he made his choice alone).
There are many scenes where the Dauntless jump off buildings/high surfaces but they are always caught by nets and there is no suicidal intention.
We also here the story of someone who was found at the bottom of the chasm, and written off as a suicide though it was likely a murder. (This occurred long before the movie’s events).
The main character’s friends joke that she has a ‘death wish’ after she engages in risky behavior/provokes ‘scary’ characters.
