Annabelle

Movie • 2014 • Horror

Report
John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia's delight with Annabelle doesn't last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.

A few times in the movie the parent lose their child, because they are trapped or Annabelle does someting weird. (They are reunited with the baby at the end of the movie.) But they never intentionally abandon their child.

Not really, as the doll is always in her house however it does appear everywhere and there's another character dressed in white who appears every now and then but I don't know if you would consider that stalking.

The main character, Mia, is terrorized throughout the film. While not being sensationalized, it is worth noting that she seems to be targeted because of her pregnancy (and later because she is a mother), so there is an undercurrent of gendered violence throughout the film.

The baby goes through significant distress, but is not physically harmed on camera. A scene looks like the mom hurt the baby but it was a trick.

the infant in question is "abducted" by a supernatural entity but it is not shown nor does any harm come to the child. i would say this is more of the demon hiding the baby than an actual abduction

There is a scene in which a pram is hit by a truck, but the baby is revealed to be in her mother's arms. The pram is full of books. There is also a scene in which Mia hit the doll repeatedly on the side of the cot, and throws it, only to reveal a lifeless body of a baby. But this is a trick from the demon and is then revealed to be a doll.

They can't find the baby in the apartment during the final stage of the film, because the demon has supernaturally hidden/taken it. It isn't really a kidnapping at all.

The killers at the start of the film (Annabelle and her boyfriend) are referred to as 'crazy people' multiple times to explain their actions, perpetuating the stereotype of violent mentally ill people. However, the film itself does not suggest they were mentally ill as they were actually cult members trying to summon a demon.

There are multiple references to suicide in the movie, including scars from a previous attempt, and a reference to "laying there" as someone is dying. The climax of the film also includes a suicide threat, with someone standing on the ledge of a window. Someone else commits suicide and the movie frames that as "atonement".

One of the characters is a catholic priest who offers the main couple spiritual guidance. Another person urges the main character to go to a church when they are attacked by the evil presence.

The spirit possessing the titular doll is discussed as a "demon", and their are references to Christianity throughout.
