Fantastic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald

Movie • 2018 • Adventure

Report
Gellert Grindelwald has escaped imprisonment and has begun gathering followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one capable of putting a stop to him is the wizard he once called his closest friend, Albus Dumbledore. However, Dumbledore will need to seek help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

It is not explicit in this movie, but Credence is 100% confirmed abused from the previous movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and that is indeed referenced in this movie. If you're familiar with the previous movie, it's more than just implied abuse.

I'm really not sure if the animal dies. In the beginning there is a little animal named Antonia, she is a Chupacabra and the pet of Grindelwald. While Grindelwald is escaping in a flying carriage Antonia crawls on him and purrs (clearly she loves him). He holds her and says she's too needy and throws her out the window. It was infuriating and ruined the entire movie for me. For a series about the love and care of animals I cannot believe that we started with the brutal and cruel treatment of one. We don't find out what happens to her. We can only hope she lives.

It is mentioned that a character's mother was put under a spell and essentially kidnapped away from her family by a man who desired her; it is mentioned she has a child with him, presumably against her will.

It's not gory. It doesn't look like real flames. And the deaths are instant and their bodies disappear. It's very "magical".

One character has multiple bones broken a minute or so apart. *Very audible* cracking noises. Evident pain but the character doesn't seem to show any lasting injuries.

There’s an infant switch when a young Leta takes her crying baby brother out of the room while the person watching them is not looking, and swaps him for a baby that is not crying; it’s said that the crying baby, her actual brother, drowned as a result of this when the boat sank.

A child is very clearly killed off-screen. A baby is drowned, the cloth covering the baby is seen sinking in the water; and the cloth and its motion through the water are repeatedly shown in memories.

Arguably, one of the characters knows they will die before walking into Grindelwald's spell. It is framed as a heroic sacrifice, but that's still arguably altruistic suicide, particularly with the struggles this character had for the rest of the movie.

The Harry Potter franchise has always been an allegory for intolerance, with the villains believing that pureblood wizards are the top of the foodchain and anyone lesser should be killed or subservient. This is never more apparent than in Crimes of Grindelwald, when Grindelwald directly alludes to a coming WWII. He uses charm and the least hateful speech he can because that's how he wins his followers, but his ideals are still hateful.

There is also heavily implied disgust towards Albus Dumbledore's past romantic feelings towards Grindelwald, even if not outwardly stated.
