They had to disappear due to the whole drama premise but a note is left and a phone call and brief moment in person come later. Also Hannahs characters back story flashbacks tell us that her mother took off and left her to live with her grandfather when she was young.

The main characters live on a house boat so you see the water around them when they are outside. Mostly episode 1 and 2, after that they are in another state but there are flashbacks throughout and I'm not sure if you see water in any of them. If so not a lot.
