Starred Up
Movie • 2013 • Drama
Report19-year-old Eric, arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father. As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist, who runs an anger management group for prisoners. Torn between gang politics, prison corruption, and a glimmer of something better, Eric finds himself in a fight for his own life, unsure if his own father is there to protect him or join in punishing him.

The male lead's father yells at him a great deal throughout the film. During the first half, the father slaps him and manhandles him. As the movie progresses, they fight both verbally and physically on more than one occasion.

This may depend on your definition. The male lead is in his late teens and both inflicts and is the victim of various violence during his interactions with his father, other prisoners, and the guards. The guards beat him up and attempt to kill him in retaliation for earlier violence.

Cigarettes are smoked throughout the film and the male protagonist spends some time asking around for a lighter at the start of the film, but addiction is not discussed/emphasized. Use your discretion.

No one is sexually assaulted throughout the course of the film, but the male protagonist does talk about his experience as a boy with a pedophile, who he apparently killed.

There are a couple instances of people being attacked or threatened with knives. One man's face/neck is cut (non-lethal). Another is stabbed and while it is not shown, the dialogue and aftermath imply is that he is killed.

We see at least one choke hold, a scene where a man stands on another man's throat, an instance of a man's head being forced underwater in a toilet, and a (non-lethal) hanging wherein the victim loses consciousness.

The prison guards tie a noose out of a ripped sheet and hang the male protagonist, who struggles and loses consciousness, but is ultimately rescued and survives. Graphic.

Multiple shower scenes, including full-frontal male nudity and a scene in which a man is attacked and engages in hand-to-hand combat while naked in the shower.

The protagonist vomits after a boxing practice, around 1:03:20. I don't know why someone voted "no"

There are multiple instances of people spitting - onto the glass of a prison door, into a toilet, on another man during a fight. Near the end of the film, a man is hanged (non-lethal) and saliva drips from his mouth in long ribbons. While there is no farting, we do see men sitting on prison toilets and one man removes an object in a plastic bag from his colon.

Note that while there is no traditional hospital scene, a man is shown resting in a room with some medical equipment against the wall, including a non-active IV. While it is not explicitly stated, it is implied that he is being held for observation in the prison's hospital ward.

Debatable. A man held in solitary confinement shows signs of distress, pacing, shouting, begging with a guard, and threatening to kill himself. It is later unclear how sincere he was, however. Potentially triggering for some.

During their group session, the men begin talking about racism and one of them states that he doesn't like Jews. Another man, surprised, says that he's half Jewish on his father's side and the rest of the group tells him this doesn't count.

A black guy doesn't die first, but it may be worth noting that a black guy is the first to be assaulted and that he is attacked in spite of doing nothing wrong.

The prisoners fight a great deal throughout the film and the guards are also quite rough. Various characters sustain injuries from being punched, slammed against objects, or cut with knives/shivs and there is a realistic amount of blood.
