Unfortunately, the girl’s dog does end up being killed. The actual killing is not described, but for a couple paragraphs, the condition he is found in is vividly described and it is horrific. It’s also referenced a few times through out the rest of the book and the descriptions can be quite detailed.
These are skippable and easily spotted within the first few words of the paragraphs containing the graphic content. It’s used as an easy “the monsters aren’t the real monsters” type thing, even though by the time it happens, that has already been made obvious. It’s lazy and unnecessary in my opinion, but the rest of the book is very, very good.
