The infamous cat scene was reportedly done by covering the cat in red dyed honey which the rats licked off without injuring the cat, and the cat was given fish as a reward and returned back to his owner. Some think the director actually did kill the cat and he is lying in order to prevent more controversy around the film, but there is no proof that he has lied. Regardless, there is still real world animal abuse as the rats were actually set on fire.
