Lambs were dyed unnatural colors. Now, in reality on set, I'm certain it was an animal-safe dye that was used. However, in the apparent time period in which the movie was set, that would not likely have been the case. So you could infer that in the fictional story, the lambs were dyed with something caustic or otherwise harmful.
