One dog, a familiar of Dr. Strange, is litterally a ghost, but you never see him die.
There is much talk about the Rainbow Bridge the place where beloved pets go to wait for their humans to cross-over into heave, but Thorog (a frog deemed worthy by a shard of Mjolnir to wield it.) is confused, he thinks the dogs are talking about the bridge from Asgard (human Thor's home) to Midgard (Earth), but the dogs insist this version is different.
During a long epic battle against a demon army to prevent them from invading Earth, D-Dog, a German Shephard Dog has no choice but to remain behind to fight the demon army while the other animal heroes must help the human see to it that the demon leader does not use the teleporter to escape.
After a long triumphant battle, the lady GSD is TRIUMPHANT, but just as the other hero pets return, they find the army subdued, but D-Dog has succumbed to her wounds, and is nowhere to be seen.
Thorog brings his companions to the Norse version of the Rainbow Bridge, and sure enough the lady German Shepherd is there resting in the middle of the bridge all alone, but there is a HAPPY ending.
SPOILER!!!
Thorog has pulled some strings, and since D-Dog died gloriously in honorable combat, she is welcomed into Valhalla, and is welcomed extatically by the Valkyrie warrior woman of Asgard.
Well, not a woman, but a D-Dog is a female, and this 4-issue mini-series, the trade paperback and one the (2023?) issue of "Women of Marvel" are her only appearance (time of writing). It almost feels like Marvel created a brand new hero, just so they didn't have to kill off one of they more popular hero-pets.
Is this an example of "fridging"? You decide.
SEE: "Is an animal abandoned.
Also, the other hero-pets mourn the fall of their comrade, but Thorog (Frog Thor) comes through in the end.
Also-also: D-Dog is all alone on the rainbow bridge and she knows there is no one to wait for to come and get her to finish crossing the bridge. The scene where she is laying all alone on the bridge does very well at depicting her defeated state, and it's a real tear-jerker. The next panel actually shows her crying.
This one is hard to answer, D-Dog is rescued from an eternity all alone on the Rainbow Bridge and welcomed triumphantly into Valhalla by the Valkyrie as her ultimate reward for falling in glorious, honorable battle, saving the Earth from a hoard of hell spawn about to invade the Earth.
Except for some preliminary story in the first part and an origin story during the search for an owner, the whole story is focused around stopping a minion (not those ones) being tricked to releasing a specific demon lord from its trap so that it may loose its army hoard onto the land.
D-Dog tells of her origin of a young dog who was left at the city dump. However, this is her motivation to don an old torn-up brown and yellow Wolverine mask, on the mission to right other's injustices, and become the greatest hero of all time.
(Remember, pets are not presents, they can't just be dumped at the thrift store when you get board with them, they are a LIFE-TIME commitment.)
