The Chief then takes back his power and autonomy by picking up the control panel in the hydrotherapy room (which had previously been shown as being too heavy to lift) and smashes a window with it, echoing one of McMurphy’s earlier escape attempts. As he runs away from the institution, the other patients cheer him on.
