Synopsis

Verden Fell is shattered after the death of his lovely wife. But, after an unexpected encounter with Lady Rowena Trevanion, Fell soon finds himself married again. Nevertheless, his late wife's spirit seems to hang over the dilapidated abbey that Fell shares with his new bride. Lady Rowena senses that something is amiss and, when she investigates, makes a horrifying discovery -- learning that Fell's dead wife is closer than she ever imagined possible.

A man is hypnotised and controlled by his wife over a long period of time and his perception of reality towards the end can't be entirely trusted as a result of her mental influence on him.

Yes but it was an evil supernatural being and not a normal cat.

At 00:49:05: The fox is killed offscreen. Rowan comes out of her trance to see dead fox with blood coming from its mouth.

Verden's eyes are clawed by a cat near the end though it is not extremely graphic.

Or believes so because of hypnotism, it's ambiguous.

Verden is easily interpreted as autistic (he is a rather reclusive, "odd" man who is stiff/awkward in social situations, has intense interests in topics like ancient art, history and archaeology that he sometimes talks about at length, and is very sensitive to light), but if so he is not an inaccurate depiction. He is a sympathetic protagonist who Rowena loves and finds attractive, though his story ends in tragedy.

No, there is not mental illness. Also, Verden isn't depressed- he is still actively grieving his deceased wife.

The protagonist and love interest are played by actors who are 53 and 28, though the protagonist is apparently meant to be younger than 53. That being said he is not remotely predatory towards her.

A priest mentions that Ligeia was viewed as a heretic/did not believe in God and tries to prevent her being buried in consecrated ground. Ancient religions and mythology are briefly discussed as Verden studies such things.

Yes, though not entirely hopeless for everyone. One protagonist dies tragically, the other lives and seems to have some happiness ahead of her.
