It’s a recognizable near-future, Simon accompanies his best friend, Laura, as she takes a new test guaranteeing to match anyone with their soulmate. As Laura hurtles towards milestones with her new man, Simon begins to understand how deeply he cares about her, even if he’s not ready to accept it.
No but…. SPOILER - there is a time when Laura is very upset and goes to Simon - they end up having sex and Laura leaves abruptly after and she is visible upset. She then meets Simon at a cafe and says how he took advantage of her because she was vulnerable and she doesn’t want to see him again.
It had to end one of two ways: 1. Classic romcom/figure out a way to be together (my preference as I like happy escapes in bleak times) or 2. the way it actually ended: with him leaving the country because it’s the only way they could have possibly gotten on with their lives without each other because they were addicted to their love but weren’t able to move beyond an affair.
Spoiler - (within the first half of the movie) Simon is driving and collects Laura. She is upset and he is changing the subject for her and she reaches between her legs and is bleeding on his car seat. He gives her a jumper to sit on. Then they’re at the hospital and she’s in a gown and they’re just taking. It’s not explicit about the miscarriage but it is present.
