Estike's mother orders her to sit outside in a chair with nothing to do, and seems neglectful generally. Her brother is also unkind to her. There is a scene where she kills her cat after saying cruel things to it, and it seems to imply that she's reacting to the way she's been treated by others. We don't see her being physically abused.

For more detail (trigger warning): A young girl (seemingly reacting to having been abused/neglected herself) decides to kill her cat. She shakes it and "wrestles" with it, rolling around on a floor. The cat is heard making distressed sounds, but no blood or gruesome detail is shown, although the scene is still hard to watch. She then traps the cat in a string bag, and returns to feed it milk laced with rat poison, forcibly pushing its head into the milk, and it dies. In an interview, the director confirms that the cat was unharmed, that the sounds of distress are archival sounds, and the cat was sedated under a vet's supervision during these scenes (this seems to be true as its body is limp the whole time - though its ears are flattened). This scene happens in the segment titled "Comes Unstitched". If you want to skip it: from the time when she starts chasing the cat around the barn, the cat is dead approximately 16-18 minutes later. She does carry the dead cat around for quite a bit longer.

There's just one scene of animal abuse, but it is difficult to watch. I added a description under "does a cat die".

The cat that is tortured in this movie was actually tortured. Regardless of any justification given by the director, it is an absolute fact that a live animal suffered greatly during the making of this movie.

A young girl, who might (though it is never explictly stated) have some kind of mental disorder (in the book, she's mentioned as a s"impleton" and possibly called the r-word by others if I recall), tortures and kills her cat.

A girl wrestles with her cat, then feeds it poison, and it dies. No humans are tortured.
