There is a new criminal mastermind at large (Professor Moriarty) and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil and lack of conscience may give him an advantage over the detective.

Holmes experiments on Watson’s dog, Gladstone, and Watson makes comments asking how many times Holmes is going to kill the dog but Gladstone isn’t harmed or killed and by the end of the film he is shown to be fine.

At the end of the film we see Holmes fall over Reichenbach Falls with Moriarty, Watson comes out onto the balcony second before he falls and sees this happen, believing Holmes to be dead. We see at the end of the film that Holmes isn’t dead and anyone familiar with the story will know that Holmes and Watson are later reunited but, as of the end of the film, Watson is uncertain as to whether or not Holmes is alive.

There isn’t excessive violence or horror but there are violent scenes. There are fistfights, guns, knives, characters are shot at with various guns and canons. At one point, a character is suspended from the ceiling by a hook that is stabbed through his shoulder, there is minimal blood and the scene isn’t too long or graphic but could be distressing.
