This is not a ghost type possession. Instead it's a parasitic organism that's taken on a human host. Affectionately referred to as "Snake Heads" (later). Later in the series proper you find out that the host just sits there and has to watch their body doing horrible things, however it's not properly addressed in this movie. The implications are worse than typical possessions and what is later fully explored in the series (with claudia black, etc).

If you squint it's oh no DID villain. As a system myself I personally don't view it this way. ALSO... If you view having ptsd and suicidal depression as a mental illness and self sacrificing behavior as violent.... yeah. I think killing with guns and bombs is violence.
