It's a grey area in retrospect. No obvious abuse appears onscreen but the actress who plays Sally revealed years later that she was often terrified and thought she was going to die because of the dangerous stunts & pyrotechnics she was asked to perform around. Knowing this, some of the genuine fear can be observed upon subsequent viewings of the film.
