In case other people need to know what I need to know going into a movie where an animal dies--How much will I cry, will I be haunted for life, etc:
Dar's dog is killed very predictably at the beginning in the village attack by a single arrow shot in the side. He still manages to drag an unconscious Dar to safety. Film then cuts to Dar waking up with his dog lying nearby, having passed from the arrow wound. It's sad but not drawn out or gratuitous or bloody. I usually blubber over animal deaths, but I didn't even tear up. Sad, yes, but you see it coming and it's not overdone.
