Yolandad's comment is correct. When Chunk and Sloth are underground, Sloth pushes up some pipes and we immediately hear the distant sound of a car crash and screaming, which is insinuated to be a result of some sort of plumbing explosion above.
Fun fact: there was a huge sequence filmed regarding a gorilla escaping from the zoo and running amok in Astoria. In the unused footage, it's actually the gorilla that causes the traffic accident, but Sloth and Chunk presume they are responsible because of the timing.
