Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. The world will be watching.
All of the tributes get to say goodbye to their families before they get to the capitol. We don't know of anyone besides Katniss had the opportunity to use this chance. There are a lot of conversations that involve the fact that most of the tributes will never return home and will therefore never see their family again.
But from everything we know/that is mentioned nobody left without saying goodbye. Still, the 'not seeing their family again/not going home' theme is heavily present throughout the movie and this might be upsetting for some viewers.
Also while we don’t see them die, a dead roast pig with an apple in his mouth is shown several times during the evaluations around 45 minutes in, then about five minutes later we see some dead fish close up on a table. When Katniss is in the arena we see the skinned body of a squirrel of some sort.
There are no rabbits in the arena (as far as I remember). Before the actual games start there are a lot of scenes that involve eating, so there might be a dead rabbit served as food at some point. Put it is never clearly pointed out and there are no scenes that actively involve rabbits.
Not in the first or second film but in the third film a character reveals that after he won his games he had been prostituted by the Capitol (said character was only 14 years old at the time he won and this began no later than 16)
While not exactly drugged, the main character is stung by genetically engineered wasps that are designed to and do produce powerful hallucinations, dizziness and blurred vision.
There are some injuries shown. The closest to body horror would probably be a body swollen with insect bites. But there is no mutation or supernatural transformation
Someone gets a bugbite in their hand which makes it swell up, someone else gets shot through their hand with an arrow, there might be more but i forgor
More romanticized than sexualized, at least in this movie. Minors are coerced into a romantic relationship including kissing on television to increase their odds of survival
No character sacrifices themselves in the form of dying so save someone.
The main character volunteers as a tribute in the Hunger Games to save her sister from being the tribute.
her dad died years before the film in a coal mine explosion and her mother is depressed and stops taking care of the children, katniss has to take care of herself and her younger sister
No one is in a real committed relationship, so no one can actually cheat. However, there is a rather complicated situation where characters are forced to act out a relationship for the cameras, and it's not clear if both of them realize it's an act. It's definitely not cheating (neither character is in another relationship) but emotionally it is tough.
When someone is stung by bees they swell up. Really bothers my sister, they show the bees before any swelling though, so skip ten-fifteen minutes when bees show up
The only Jump scare in the movie is the sudden Mutt attack near towards the end
Total jump scare count 1: (1 Major)
MAJOR JUMP SCARES IN BOLD
(MAJOR) (1:57:36) (A WILD MUTT CREATURE SUDDENLY JUMPS OUT OF THE BUSHES AND ATTACKS PETER)
Safe. Other commenters need to stop voting yes. There's a separate page for the book AND the second movie. This page is for THIS MOVIE. It's confusing for people (like me) who legitimately have emetephobia and don't remember or haven't watched the movies. Respect. The. Rules. If you're voting yes only because the book or second movie has someone throwing up, GO TO THAT PAGE and MARK IT THERE, not HERE.
During the beginning of the movie there are several scenes that are close to dissociation/derealization.
During these scenes, the character's surroundings are blurry and the sound is very dull. The character themselves seems disoriented and confused while also being stressed and anxious/panicked. They also seem to process information slower and take longer to answer.
primrose has one in the VERY FIRST scene, after a nightmare, but its brief, and another before her name is called. those are the only ones but all the characters are very anxious thorough the whole movie
In the books, the people in the capital drink a special cocktail so they can purge and eat more.
If you've read the book, you'll see it in the movie. If you haven't read the book, I'm not sure if it will be apparent.
the girls are sometimes wearing short skirts, dresses, high heels, etc to look more attractive and likeable to the capitol but it isnt talked about or an important part of the movie
For the storyline (lots of people dying) it has a happy ending.
The games are concluded in a somewhat satisfying way (protagonists survive), their mentors are still mentoring, etc.
But, the world is still "broken" and the protagonists are aware of their vulnerability.
The series has a lot of hard aspects to it, and whether you think the whole thing is worth the ride or not is subjective. There is a satisfying end, though it isn't all happily ever after. And there is a lot of heartbreak along the way.
