Justin McLeod is a former teacher who lives as a recluse on the edge of town after his face is disfigured from an automobile accident ten years earlier, in which a boy was incinerated—and for which he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Also suspected of being a paedophile, he is befriended by Chuck, causing the town's suspicions and hostility to be ignited.

Yes. There's a scene where the kid protagonist caught his sister and her boyfriend being together in the room. The sister's boyfriend attacks the kid, then the kid's cat jumps on the man to defend the protagonist. The man grabs the cat and throws it against the wall, and you can hear the ribs of the cat break and the cat crying.
No physical wounds are shown nor the cat dying, but it's pretty upsetting.
