Will Brendan succeed in his quest?
This movie contains 12 potentially triggering events.
Brendan's uncle controls his movements out of fear for Brendan's safety. These fears are proven true later. Brendan escapes, and later reconciles with his uncle, who now regrets his earlier treatment of Brendan.
I'm not sure where exactly to put this, but there is a man whose arm is cut off by the Northmen. (The scene fades to black just in time, but you do hear the slash of a sword; and the man shows up again later with his arm clearly missing).
Technically no. Aisling's soul is permanently trapped in her wolf form but based on the scene where she is growing physically weaker and her face looks skeletal, it is easy to think that she died.
There's also the attack of the Northmen where we don't see any children die on screen, but it's implied that a few did, as well as people of all ages. (You do see the silhouettes of some people falling after a staircase collapses, but no graphic detail is shown).
Cellach (who is Brendan's uncle, not father) is shot in the shoulder with an arrow, but he doesn't die. During the epilogue, the audience is told that Brother Aidan (a father figure to Brendan) dies peacefully of old age years after the fact. Both Brendan and Aisling's parents are dead but this happens years before the events of the movie and they don't go into any detail about what happened. (Besides Aisling saying that Chrom "took her mother").
There is a moment of what might be interpreted as suicidal thought, when a wounded and grieving character tells others to "leave him be," rather than helping him. However, his life is saved.
It's bittersweet. Aidan dies of old age, believing his old friend Cellach has been killed. Brendan later returns to Kells to discover that his uncle is, in fact, alive and well. And the Book of Kells is completed.
