The villainess kills her niece's kitten very near the beginning. As soon as the kitten goes down the stairs, mute it and don't watch for about 2 minutes. Great film otherwise.

A nasty old hag who is watching over the tweens in the story beats a poor cat to death. The beating seems to go on for some time (though it probably is 20 secs), with the cat’s screams, quite horrible, going on the whole time. However . . . she very quickly gets what’s coming to her. And we never even once see the cat - not when it’s alive or when it’s dead. The feline is only a suggestion. Very odd.
