Life is hard on the Flemings' ranch in the Alberta foothills where abused or neglected horses find refuge with a kind, hard-working family. Debts abound and the bank is about to foreclose. Can they keep the ranch running?
Adult Ty has a difficult relationship with his parents, and often recounts how they have 'abandoned him' through childhood and adulthood. Mallory also frequently believes her parents have abandoned her, but she is being overdramatic and actually loves life on the ranch.
In the first season there is a barn fire (SPOILER) the character that starts the fire has been watching the characters for days to see when they'll be away.
When Miley does barrel-riding on a (recently rehabilitated) horse at the rodeo school, we see her thrown off the horse and she's not moving and showing no signs of being conscious from what I could tell. Then the episode ends.
Caleb buys a pony at auction and finds out later that the pony has severe anxiety after being confined to a small shed by its previous owner. Amy works with the pony to help the anxiety. So I would say that the animal was abused before going to auction, we just didn't see any of it.
There are a few minor character deaths throughout the show. (SPOILER) A major main character dies somewhere in season 13-17. The characters are still recovering from his death in later seasons.
After Georgie tells her parents she can still qualify for Europe, she skips a meal and the scene cuts to her out for a run. She starts looking tired and s*, veers off the trail, and v*s. Two sounds, no visual (you just see her lean over, but she’s out of frame when it happens.)
Georgie looks s* a couple of other times in the episode, but there’s no more v*.
SPOILER! X X X X X X Z X Z Z Mallory is pregnant and doesn't make it to the hospital in time, instead giving birth in the back of Amy's pickup truck. The baby has the umbilical cord wrap around his neck, but an EMT is there helping and the baby is perfectly fine.
Definitely in season 1 or 2 there is a boy rescued from the river, and a story is told of another boy that previously drowned. A flashback is shown but not actual drowning. It is a distressing episode.
