It’s not on screen and there’s no sounds of of the dog whimpering or getting hurt, but it’s implied the dog died by (spoilers)
the water horse eating him.
The dog is implied to have been eaten by the water horse (off screen, but there is accompanying audio). At one point a human is also at risk of this, however he survives.
The main character's father goes off to war and the children are left behind with their mother, and (minor spoilers) the father does not return. No intentional abandonment.
It is implied at the end that the original water horse has died, since it laid an egg and it’s explicitly stated that they only do that when they’re about to die
The main character has a fear of drowning and experiences moments (both real and imagined) where he is unable to breathe while underwater. He survives, and is fine.
Nothing too gruesome. Dead fish get chopped up from far away and there’s a quick scene of a dead deer that’s been killed by soldiers. The killing of it is not on screen.
The main character has a fear of drowning, and struggles with it throughout the movie. There is a scene near the beginning where he imagines that he has drowned, and it may be somewhat anxiety-inducing, but he never actually dies from drowning, nor does anyone else.
