Don’t let the still-developing CGI technology keep you from enjoying this hidden gem out of New Zealand.
It felt like watching the type of family films from the ‘80s and ‘90s that toed that fine line between the PG and PG-13 ratings in the U.S. by sprinkling in darker moments and themes between light-hearted, wholesome content.
Fans of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Harry and the Hendersons, and Free Willy will undoubtedly enjoy the film’s empathy toward nature and the unknown, though I must highly caution that there are a lot of scenes of animals and children in peril.

It’s not on screen and there’s no sounds of of the dog whimpering or getting hurt, but it’s implied the dog died by (spoilers) the water horse eating him.

It is implied at the end that the original water horse has died, since it laid an egg and it’s explicitly stated that they only do that when they’re about to die
The main character's father goes off to war and the children are left behind with their mother, and (minor spoilers) the father does not return. No intentional abandonment.

Nothing too gruesome. Dead fish get chopped up from far away and there’s a quick scene of a dead deer that’s been killed by soldiers. The killing of it is not on screen.
The main character has a fear of drowning and experiences moments (both real and imagined) where he is unable to breathe while underwater. He survives, and is fine.
The main character has a fear of drowning, and struggles with it throughout the movie. There is a scene near the beginning where he imagines that he has drowned, and it may be somewhat anxiety-inducing, but he never actually dies from drowning, nor does anyone else.
