Report

Synopsis

On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

Emotional abuse from grandfather, who raised female lead. He openly resents that she is not a boy and abruptly emotionally distances himself from her partway through the movie. He condemns her for taking an interest in traditions intended only for men and blames her throughout the film for his own perceived failures. He unexpectedly stops picking her up from school, leaving her to walk home. Midway through, she is sent to stay with her uncle because her grandfather refuses to have her in the house anymore. When the whales beach themselves, he yells at and openly blames her.

This isn't totally clear. The protagonist's twin does not survive birth, but cause/timing of his death is not elaborates upon. The deceased is extensively shown, but mostly only the blanket he is swaddled in is visible.

One character has a bag of weed and a pipe, which implies that he smoked marijuana before the scene. It is a very short scene.

A large crab is seen outside of the water. If you don't like looking at bugs, you might not like that either.

The protagonist's mother dies in childbirth, so not TECHNICALLY, but extremely likely triggering for this category.

There are a couple of drowning scares, but no one drowns. In one scene, the protagonist dives into the sea and stays down off-camers for so long that another character goes in and begins searching for her, but then she pops back up and is completely fine. At the end of the movie, she rides a whale and it is clear that the community believes she has drowned, but they later receive a call from the hospital and, again, she is fine.
