I may be stupid but isn't it sexist to have "woman" specified here and not "person"? Why can't a man (or non-binary) be brutalized for spectacle?

The problems with forgiving their abuser and continuing to let themself get abused are discussed many times but for all intents and purposes, yes, an abused person forgives their abuser. Fletcher is pretty much the most abusive teacher imaginable, being verbally and physically abusive, bigoted as all hell, and has unapologetically driven a student to s*icide. The lead agrees with and supports Fletcher's belief that he needs to push his students through any means, and he succeeds as a result. It's up to interpretation but the most clear interpretation is that the abuse was worth it for both of them.
