The film begins with a discussion about an old man and woman who have recently passed away, and their adult son returns to their old house. A girl’s parents are shot in front of her, and it appears that the father is dead, but he revives. There’s a close-up, slow-motion scene where a man presses a gun to a woman’s forehead and pulls the trigger as her daughter watches and she mouths the words “I love you”, but the chamber is empty.

The film suggests that a man is possessed by or in thrall of the devil, and kills children as a sacrifice. It is ambiguous whether it is ‘true’ in the world of the film or part of the man’s illness. Another man has visions of dead children and seems demonically possessed, but it is revealed that it is a way of freeing those children’s souls after they had been killed or sacrificed.
The antagonist is implied to be disabled or on the autism spectrum, as well as possibly possessed by a demon. His mannerisms, like not making eye contact and not being able to speak to people, are portrayed as being creepy and sinister
