In backstory in the anime, Sai is given a sister who dies. As well, viewers familiar with Chobits will have the knowledge of Kaede's imminent death, even though she survives Angelic Layer.

The way the main character's disability is portrayed felt vaguely ableist in a way not unusual for 2001 anime, but the plotline was so absurd I personally wasn't upset by it.

An important part of the plot is that the protagonist's mother left her due to feeling she was a "useless mother" due to her disability (social anxiety in the manga, MS in the anime) and, in the anime. to assist with research and development for her condition. Misaki has no idea where Shuuko is and spends the whole series trying to smile through it, but has a breakdown admitting how much this has hurt her and confronts her mother at the end of the series before they reconcile.

An angel, not a person, loses a fight underwater and becomes still. She is a doll so she doesn't need to breathe and is fine afterwards.

Icchan often follows Misaki at a distance before either actually greeting her or simply leaving; him being "mistaken" for a creepy stalker is a running gag. The tournament-series trope of upcoming opponents following and observing the protagonist also regularly appears.

Basic Angels before customization resemble artist anatomy dolls or mannequins, and one could argue that all Angels are.

Not onscreen (though Misaki's father is dead before the story begins), but one is in poor health, and viewers familiar with Chobits can easily infer that she died in order to clean up a plot hole between the two series.
