Paul is fired over a phone call because of an alleged affair with a coworker which he denies happened; you can easily interpret this as the company looking for an excuse to fire him so they won’t be held responsible if he dies. He also talks to quite a few people on the phone throughout who are very dismissive of the dangerous situation he’s in and talk to him as if he’s overreacting. Paul is told another man was successfully rescued from a similar situation, which later turns out to be a lie.
