Recurring subplot throughout season 2, including trying to figure out the cause/motivation of the parent’s death. The death scene is quite graphic and although the scenes are quite short, they are repeated flashbacks across multiple episodes.
S3E4 a parent dies, but the parent was not really present in the series and they were very abusive during a main character’s childhood

Honestly all the characters are mentally unwell. In season 4 there a large part of the plot is a court case that focuses on a man who was very violent while in prison. The show approaches it in a manner to show that the violence is connected to the US prison system not treating and directly worsening his already existing mental illnesses.

It's a Mystery show, and they often cut off scenes before telling information, then go back and re-do the scene with the new info. It can also be unhelpful in showing when you're in the present-day vs a flashback vs a flash-forward
