He eventually refers to Fergus as a friend and even trusts him enough to ask him to find his girlfriend and buy her a drink, as well as pass along a message from him after he's dead.

Not overtly, but there is a trangender woman who dresses effeminately, but is discovered to still have male genitalia during a sexual interaction. Afterwards, they are referred to several times as not being a woman/girl/lady. Eventually, the male character attracted to her says he's going to make her into a man by removing her make-up, cutting her hair, and making her dress in a man's outfit. He says he'd like her better that way, however this is actually done to disguise her and protect her from harm.
