Bungo Stray Dogs

TV Show • 2016 • Animation

Report
Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

Played up for comedic purposes. Katai “stalks” a girl because he’s fallen in love with her and Higuchi does the same because she spotted her beside Akutagawa. They mostly just follow her around for the day, but it’s nothing too serious.

There are regular flashbacks to Atsushi being severely beaten as a child. Additionally, all flashbacks of Dazai beating Akutagawa are technically child abuse, as Akutagawa was 16 at the time that those beatings were shown (during the Dark Era / season 2 prologue). The scene at the end of season one involving Akutagawa strangling and attempting to kill Kyouka is also child abuse, as she is 14. Scenes of Steinbeck and Lovecraft torturing Q (in episodes 8 and 9 of season 2) are child abuse.

Not on screen, but it's implied. The character Mori openly admits to being a pedophile and in the anime and manga, it's shown that he's been around three young, vulnerable girls so it's not such a stretch. One of these girls is actually his ability, Elise, but she calls him a "lolicon pervert" in the manga, and in the anime, Kyouka is seen looking horrified upon seeing Mori again.

A lot the characters in the series are orphans including the main characters. A man who takes care of a orphanage dies along with the orphans he was taking care of the man dying by a bullet/bleeding out and the children dying in a car bomb explosion.

The main character was abused and manipulated when growing up in an orphanage so no direct parent death on screen but very much directly said.

There's a major plot point where two of the main characters are kidnapped and brought to the Mafia the first time he escapes easily being in full control of the situation. The second time a different main character gets kidnapped and it ends up in an all out feud.

A couple Minor characters have said they've been victims of human trafficking as well. Mostly in S3

There's a lot of characters who can be easily interpreted as autistic (coming from an autistic person), but since none of them are canonically autistic there's no misrepresentation (and as often happens, they act like people rather than stereotypes)

it’s unconfirmed, but it’s possible that kenji has one. his ability requires being hungry, and when he’s not hungry, he’s asleep. he’s rarely seen sleeping, so he probably starves himself in order to work at the agency.

tell me you dont understand japanese culture without telling me you dont understand japanese culture. while western culture sees Dazai’s jokes as tasteless and inhumane, its quite common for this to appear in japanese media. it doesnt make it okay, because one could argue that jokes like this are a reason japan has a high suicide rate but please remember to try and consume media with the source in mind. as nice as it is that anime is more popular overseas, its still produced for japanese people by japanese people.

there aren’t any actual demons, but fyodor is referred to as demonic, and some translations refer to dazai during his time in the mafia as the “demon prodigy” but this isn’t official. one of akutagawa’s ability forms is named “demonic armour”.

Heavily implied, but not explicitly shown (no kissing or verbal confirmation of the nature of their relationship, just a lot of the sister hanging off the brother and loudly declaring her love for him and being generally suggestive).

A boy is told “children without parents don’t have the luxury to cry”. It isn’t a sexist statement, more abusive

Gore and blood is prevalent throughout all seasons and anything not yet animated featured in the manga, and depictions of gore may get quite graphic in the light novels and in manga panels.

Multiple characters use guns as their main weapon. (Kunikida, Dazai at some points, Tachihara, Higuchi, Ango is seen using a non-loaded gun as a threat, Oda, Gide, Twain, all background Port Mafia characters)
