ReportNakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

There are regular flashbacks to Atsushi being severely beaten as a child. Additionally, all flashbacks of Dazai beating Akutagawa are technically child abuse, as Akutagawa was 16 at the time that those beatings were shown (during the Dark Era / season 2 prologue). The scene at the end of season one involving Akutagawa strangling and attempting to kill Kyouka is also child abuse, as she is 14. Scenes of Steinbeck and Lovecraft torturing Q (in episodes 8 and 9 of season 2) are child abuse.

A lot the characters in the series are orphans including the main characters. A man who takes care of a orphanage dies along with the orphans he was taking care of the man dying by a bullet/bleeding out and the children dying in a car bomb explosion.

Dazai, one of the main characters regularly jokes about wishing to commit suicide and in the past this desire seems more serious. There's a part in a flashback where another character, Kyouka asks someone to kill her, the main character Atsushi regularly expresses doubt over whether or not he has the right to live. A young child is manipulated into killing herself by pulling a grenade, and in the manga another character is believed to have killed himself by getting cut in half. Death, suicide, and the desires to live and die are frequent themes in the story.

tell me you dont understand japanese culture without telling me you dont understand japanese culture. while western culture sees Dazai’s jokes as tasteless and inhumane, its quite common for this to appear in japanese media. it doesnt make it okay, because one could argue that jokes like this are a reason japan has a high suicide rate but please remember to try and consume media with the source in mind. as nice as it is that anime is more popular overseas, its still produced for japanese people by japanese people.
