Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Movie • 2017 • Crime

Report
After seven months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at Bill Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Jason Dixon, an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

Characters describe being in a knowingly abusive relationship, and one scene involves a man becoming so enraged at his ex-wife that he violently throws a table and holds her against the wall by her throat. Their son threatens him with a knife.

We don't see anyone smoking marijuana. Someone is arrested for possession off-screen, but we don't ever see any drugs.

Burnt corpses are excessive gore for me, even when, as in this case, we only see one in a couple of pictures for a moment. This happens about 24 minutes into the film, immediately after the line "Jesus Christ, 'a lady with a fucking funny eye'?!?" Look away from some point during that line and until you hear a little retching/coughing sound.

the vast majority of the town's police department is lazy and incompetent at best and intentionally malicious and cruel at worst. the idea of the "thin blue line" underscores the entire film's plot with most of the cop characters doing as much as they can to keep their reputation and position of power after they are publicly called out for not doing their jobs. there are also several throwaway lines mentioning one of the officer's history with targeting people of color and torturing people in custody and a few others about how most police officers have "racist leanings" and the ones who don’t are homophobic. another police officer calls one man a slur and threatens to arrest another essentially for not being nice to him at the beginning of the film. there is a cop character that comes in around halfway through the movie who tries to turn things around, though.

Do not watch this film with someone undergoing cancer treatment. I watched this film with my father who was a movie buff and former actor because I had heard that it was one of the more well-regarded films at TIFF the previous year. The depiction of cancer and illness in general in this film is extremely insensitive and unhealthy.

one character gets beaten by a police officer, shown in somewhat graphic detail. the officer hits him on the nose with the butt of his gun and the strike and immediate damage is clearly shown. he is then thrown out a second-story window and while the landing isn't shown (there's an awning in the way) a bone breaking is clearly audible. there is also blood shown from the aftermath of a suicide and a man getting his thumbnail drilled with a dental tool
