It's a bittersweet ending that leans more toward bitter. Parvana is able to free her father, but the two of them are separated from the other half of the family. The entire family has fled their hometown on the eve of the American military response to 9/11. None of them know if they will survive, but Parvana keeps her father's spirits up by telling stories.
