Scenes in the palace’s kitchen feature the preparation of animal carcasses for cooking, including plucking poultry, taking cuts from a sheep carcass, and preparing a roasting tray of a whole fish.

Throughout the film, one of the main characters (Khedija, the protagonist's mother) is continuously sexually exploited by the head of the ruling family and other men of the palace. This includes implied sex, as well as the beginning of a forcible rape scene, which is witnessed by her daughter (Alia). Alia is also touched inappropriately while asleep by a male member of the palace elite, who then takes her to a private room. He is interrupted by Khedija (triggering the aforementioned rape scene).

The main character discusses aborting the child she is carrying at the beginning of the film with her partner. At the end, she decides not to. Also, in the final quarter of the film, her mother attempts to self-abort by hitting herself in the stomach.

The ruler of the palace, who is implied to be the main character's (Alia's) father, makes some questionable remarks about her, including referencing her during foreplay.
