Shinichi Izumi is a normal high school boy whose right hand has become infected with an alien parasite that names itself "Migi" ("right"). Migi is the first parasite to develop a symbiotic relationship with its host, as he and Shinichi slowly develop a grudging friendship. Migi isn't the only Parasite on earth, however, and as cases of Parasites killing humans begin to emerge, humans seek to kill off Parasites. Shinichi and Migi find themselves caught in between these two sides of the struggle over planet earth.
This tv show contains 36 potentially triggering events.
The parasites are able to know where all other nearby parasites are, and sometimes seek them out. A human girl also has a similar ability and develops a crush on the protagonist. She keeps trying to follow him and seek him out using this ability.
There clearly is emotional (not to mention physical) abuse in the show, but various villains have a habit of being more direct and blunt about their feelings of hatred. They do not lie about their intentions in the way gaslighting does. At the very least, they are honest about being villains.
Not necessarily abuse, but a baby is repeatedly held by the back of his clothes and the mother of the child threatens to use him as a shield when the protagonist mentions something about attacking her. Another character also threatens to toss him off of a balcony. He remains unharmed though.
As a result of grief over losing his wife, the protagonist's father starts drinking heavily. This seems to get resolved later on, as no consequences for this drinking take place.
A character in the first episode is assaulted when the main character gropes her breast. I believe it’s implied it wasn’t meant to happen, that it was a parasyte controlling his hand. Nonetheless, it was unconsensual & qualifies as assault.
Repetitive amputation, as parasytes decapitate their hosts to take over their bodies. Limbs are also chopped off during various fights with other parasytes throughout the show.
The main character has a parasite living in his right hand for most of the show. Consequently, when the parasite is in charge, the hand and fingers are able to take unnatural shapes.
The protagonist's mother is killed by a parasite. A detective character's wife, who is the mother of his child, is also killed by a parasite. Finally, a parasite who gives birth to a human child gets killed.
In an early scene, a parasite who infected someone cuts off his own hand while trying to convince Migi (the main character's parasite) to come with him.
Various individuals and crowds of people are repeatedly shown to be sent in a panic across various episodes of the show, often accompanied by action dubstep or electronic music.
No slurs, but at one point, when the protagonist attempts to defend a classmate who is being beat up by a gang, a member of the gang calls the victim of the beating the protagonists' boyfriend.
There's a non-graphic scene between two adult figures standing naked together, meant to be symbolic of their attempts to create a child-- the second instance is (SPOILER) a sex scene between two main characters- it is however, tasteful and not too graphic [both are 18 at that point in time]
(Spoilers) Not a sad ending, but not much of a happy ending either. In the manga, the parasyte in the main character’s hand eventually becomes good, and when everything is resolved, disappears into his body. It reappears after a long period of time, to save him from being killed, and it is the last time it reappears. The parasyte said that it is processing a lot of inward research to understand much of the universe, in solitude, and talking or fighting will just take much of the time away from this process. So it said goodbye a final time, feeling for the first time, some hint of warm emotions.
In one of the early episodes, the main character saves a child from being hit by a car. What happened to the person in the car is never shown.
Later on, a truck also collides with one of the parasytes.
A woman is shot to death by police in later episodes. Police also later raid a building in search of parasytes and kill several people, many of them human, with guns.
