Jerusha is writing to "daddy long legs", a man who sponsors her college education to be a writer. He asks her to write to him once a month in order to work on her writing skills but he says he will never respond, and she constantly asks him if they could ever meet and he never responds. He falls in love with her and finds out through her letters that his niece is friends with her in college and goes as his real self (jervis) to meet up with her. Throughout the musical there are scenes where 'daddy' advises her to work at a farm over the summer. This is a farm that Jervis happens to have ties to, and he goes there as Jervis to 'say hello' on multiple occasions. Jerusha is quite happy to see him and has no idea he's sending her here so he can run into her as Jervis. Later on, a year later, she gets an opportunity to go to Paris with her suitemate and her family, and because she talks about being suited to marry her suitemate's older brother, he gets jealous and 'daddy' advises her that she should go to the farm again instead of Paris, so she does. Jervis later appears to say hello. There is even a scene where Jerusha falls in love with him and they even nearly start a relationship together. when she learns the truth a few years later, that Jervis is Daddy and knows what "daddy" knows, and is absolutely horrified as she never wanted Jervis to know about her past.
