It is implied that the main character's friend is being abused at home. I am unsure if there are any other instances.

The book takes place in an Indian reservation, which, due to many factors, often has people with addictions- most commonly alcohol.

It doesn't happen in the plot, but it is mentioned that a horse drowned, washed up on shore, was burned, and then washed up on shore again. They spend a whole chapter on this.

the main character talks about masturbation for like a whole paragraph.

The main character also thinks of almost every woman he meets (that isnt his family) in a sexual way.
Probably the most dramatic show of that is a scene where the school councillor is consoling him after telling him something important and sad, but he just gets a b***r when she hugs him. The whole scene is just kinda uncomfotable.
