Yes, the first described victim is a gay man. A main character who is heavily coded to be gay also dies.

All of the kids except for Mike had abusive/neglectful parents. Beverly is sexually, physically, and emotionally abused by her father as a child and husband in the future. Ben is force-fed by his mother a lot. Richie's parents are distant and neglectful. Bill's parents ignore him after the death of his brother. Stan's parents are rude to him and are rarely shown in the book. Eddie's mom is obsessive over him and won't let him do anything. She is a hypochondriac and forces her son into becoming one. She also manipulates him by crying and making him feel bad for her so he won't leave. Henry is also abused by his father. A kid and his little brother are beaten by their step-dad. The older one was beaten for accidentally letting the door slam and had been p*****g blood for weeks." The step-dad bent all the younger one's fingers and later killing him by beating him with a hammer.
