Loving Vincent
Movie • 2017 • Animation
ReportThe film brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life to tell his remarkable story. Every one of the 65,000 frames of the film is an oil-painting hand-painted by 125 professional oil-painters who travelled from all across the world to the Loving Vincent studios in Poland and Greece to be a part of the production. As remarkable as Vincent’s brilliant paintings are his passionate and ill-fated life and mysterious death.

No finger or toe mutilation is depicted. We do see a shot of Vincent lying in bed with the side is his head bloodied where he has removed his ear, but this is the closest this film comes to mutilation of the extremities. Please check the year and full title prior to reviewing.

No children die throughout the course of the film, but there is a scene showing Vincent's mother standing by the grave of his still-born elder brother and some description of the impact of the lost baby on Vincent's development. Use your discretion.

In a way, it's implied that Vincent could have let himself die and take the blame of the shot saying it was suicide when it could not have been the case

It's implied with the scenes that Theo Van Gogh could have died when he still had a young child. Not stated nor confirmed tho

It's not clear if Vincent tried to kill himself and then died days later because of the injury or if someone shot him and he died because of it

Vincent is described as struggling from a young age to measure up to his perhaps idealized still-born elder brother, but there is no implication that he experienced body dysmorphia. The removal of his ear was due to other psychological factors.

This film was hand-painted by hundreds of artists in Van Gogh's style. While some scenes actively integrate a shakey cam effect, be advised that most scenes have a swirling or trembling quality caused by minor inconsistencies between frames that may further contribute to motion sickness.

This film was hand-painted by hundreds of artists in Van Gogh's style. Most scenes have a swirling, trembling, or flickering quality caused by minor inconsistencies between frames that results in a strobe-like effect - particularly in the black-and-white flashback scenes (a significant portion of the runtime) and higher-contrast scenes. Use your discretion.

Some side characters complain about Vincent's presence, referring to him as "a foreigner" and at least one character identifies him as Dutch. Various characters also verbally condemn Vincent for harming and potentially killing himself, with one going so far as to call him "evil".

Multiple scenes depict Vincent's gut wound, including his bloodied shirt, blood on his hands and on things he touches on his way back to the inn, and a fairly close shot of the actual bullet wound. We also see him deliver his severed ear to a woman in a handkerchief (some blood), as well as a shot of him shortly after removal of the ear, in which the side of his head is bloody.

Vincent either shoots himself or is shot off-screen. We hear the gun fire in one scene and never see the gun, itself, which is noted to be missing.
