It’s set in a women’s prison so there are some brutal moments, but nothing ever too sensationalized / unrealistic for the environment of the film.

Partway through the film, after being goaded by the sadistic matron, one of the side characters hangs herself. Her body is briefly seen by Marie and then the moment passes.

I would argue yes — between solitary confinement, matrons getting physically violent with inmates, and a particularly jarring scene where someone is held down and their head is forcibly shaved.

Marie finds a kitten at one point and two scenes later is confronted about having the kitten taken away. A prison riot is prompted and while we don’t see the actual moment the kitten dies, we see the aftermath when Marie pulls its body from the rubble. It lasts for about 30 seconds and the kitten is limp — but hilariously enough when she first turns around you can see the kitten alive meowing very subtly (the character is dead but the real kitten is clearly just playing limp). The moment passes but it’s a heartbreaking moment in the film.
