Silent Running
Movie • 1972 • Adventure
ReportIn a future Earth barren of all flora and fauna, the planet's ecosystems exist only in large pods attached to spacecraft. When word comes in that the pods are to be jettisoned into space and destroyed so that the spacecraft can be reused for commercial purposes, most of the crew of the Valley Forge rejoice at the prospect of going home. Not so for botanist Freeman Lowell who loves the forest and its creatures, so decides to take matters into his own hands to protect what he loves.

(Spoilers)
In addition to the countless animals destroyed in the forest explosions, three
of the major characters are "drones" (R2D2-like robots that seem to have feelings) that the main character treats likes pets. Two of the drones are "killed." I personally found this as upsetting as an animal dying when I first watched this movie as a child.

There is one scene in which a robot gives a man stitches and dresses his wound in a scene very reminiscent of surgery. Nothing too gory or anything, but the association is there. A hospital scene in all but location.

SPOILERS: The main character kills himself and a remaining drone using explosives before anyone can rescue him and find out what he's done to save the forest dome. We only see the explosion from the outside.

(Spoilers)
The main character and one of his two robot companions die at the end, leaving the other robot alone for eternity. (The movie establishes that the robots, though they can't speak, have emotions and feelings, sort of like R2D2 in Star Wars.) I saw this for the first time when I was 8 or 9 years old, and this movie was my "Bambi" moment as a child!

Doesn't seem to be nuclear, but explosions nonetheless.
