Her cat is sick from the start of the movie and once she gets medicine tells a friend to watch it while she is gone and says she needs 2 of each pill (there's 3 bottles) twice a day. We see him give the cat 2 pills from one bottle once. When she returns her cat is dead and she holds his lifeless body. I think the cat did die due to neglect from the friend who was partying and doing drugs.

The two main characters are both gay, and as it is based on a true story, their death dates are shown before the end credits. The main character's best friend, a gay man, dies of AIDS. He is shown severely weakened with this disease at the end of the film, and the disease is discussed, but the film ends before he dies. He also remarks, earlier in the film, that all his friends are dead, referring to the AIDS crisis. However, no gay characters die onscreen.
