In the world of the book, there are miniature companion animals called teacup pets. Camelia learns from another Belle that Princess Sophia ordered a previous Belle to try to change her teacup crocodile into a teacup dragon. The attempt involved breaking its spine and neck bones to try to create wings. The Princess threw the animal out a window to try to make it fly, and it died. Another Belle in history killed a bird. Finally, meat and animal products are mentioned throughout the book.

Prince Alfred attempts to rape Camellia during a beauty session. He grabs her by the wrists, bruises her cheek, and forces a kiss on her. When she tells him to stop, he calls her feisty. He tries to take off her clothes. He hints that he may have also assaulted Camellia's sister Edelweiss. She is able to defend herself, almost killing him, until someone else intervenes. Authorities say that they will banish him, but Princess Sophia arranges for him to marry one of her ladies in waiting, who is in love with someone else.

When Camellia tries to change too many things at once in one of her beauty appointments, the recipient starts vomiting. Camellia herself vomits at a party from nervousness and motion sickness, and then later in the book from being poisoned.

Two LGBT people die near the end of the book - one of old age, I think, and the other is tortured to death
