Lodgers
Movie • 2017 • Drama
Report1920, rural Ireland. Anglo-Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; and if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother - and with the curse that haunts them.

Sort of. Two women are followed through the woods by a group of men. They run away, and the men break into two teams to try and track them down in the woods. We do not see them catch either woman, but the fate of one of them is not seen.

No animal dies onscreen; however, two dead lovebirds are found in a cage and it is implied that they starved to death.

None are abused onscreen but two skeletal lovebirds in a cage are said to have been "left to die" ie starved to death after their owner died.

There is a small pile of bones and feathers in a birdcage. There are other bones strung up into a necklace, shown briefly.

There is an extended sequence in the final act where characters are under water, including one character being dragged down by ghost-type figures.

Not on screen. A young man (Shaun) is missing his right leg from below the knee.

There is almost no gore in this film. There are two instances of stabbing, but neither is overly graphic.

There are several references to the death of the parents of the main characters. Late in the film we see a flashback showing how they died. One of the children witnessed this death.

The two main characters are essentially held hostage in their home by the spirits of their parents/ancestors.

They’re not very bad, quite mild. As someone who practically can’t watch movies with jumpscares, I watched it without issue. It’s much more gothic horror with mood horror than classic jumpscar-y movie

SPOILER: Rachel and Edward's parents kill themselves, as their parents and their parents, and their parents had, according to Rachel.

Rachel is fascinated with the prosthetic leg worn by Sean. She is not cruel but the fascination may read as ableist. Later, an antagonist calls Sean a "cripple" and implies that he is useless, as Rachel does moments before to drive Sean away.

I would say no, though there is a scene where a character sees Edward in the shadow of a barely cracked door and thinks he is his sister, Rachel. When he comes more into the light, the character sees that it is Edward. It is important to note that the characters are twins, and this scene is mainly to drive home that fact.

Edward makes multiple passes at his twin sister, Rachel.
(SPOILER:
It's revealed the twins are the product of incest and that has been true for many generations)

SPOILERS! The film ends with the death of Rachel's love interest, Sean, who is killed by the ghosts of their ancestors. Rachel herself manages to leave the house, which is good, but she is followed by a strange bird that seems to represent the ghosts of the family, implying it might not be over.

Characters drowning is a major theme of the film. Water frequently bubbles up into the house. We see in a flashback the drowning deaths of the parents, seeing that the mother was actually murdered by their father. At the end (MAJOR SPOILER!) Rachel's love interest, Sean, dies of drowning while attempting to rescue Rachel.
